As China has placed great importance on refuse burning, the number of incineration plants nationwide is growing fast these years. At the same time, remonstrance is heard more and more frequently owing to people’s remarkably enhanced environmental awareness. However, I find that many Chinese people now still lack the basic knowledge of refuse disposal. So I designed this infographic, hoping to demystify incineration to ordinary people in a simple way, and to help them look at the problem systematically: incineration itself is not that horrible. So, firstly I describe the status of incineration industry today in China – supported by the government, it develops really fast. Then, several representative and influential protest activities are listed in the second part to show people’s dissenting attitude. And we find that, environmental pollution, is actually the most important part that leads to the controversy. Then, in the third section, I do analysis about how pollution forms in the three stages of refuse disposal: (1) source separation (2) trash transportation (3) the incineration. I want to convey a fact that, the toxic fly ash and poisonous gas seemingly caused totally by incinerators is also the superposed result of our carelessness, misdoings, and imperfect disposing system. So it will be much better if we people can practice trash classification in everyday life, and pay more attention to the improvement of the whole industry chain, rather than merely blame incineration plants in a very emotional way like before. The data used here are all collected from the website of State Statistics Bureau, China Urban-Rural Construction Statistical Yearbook, and authoritative report from National Academy of Development and Strategy, RUC. So the data definitely have high reliability and can hardly be questioned. However, as the data publishing has always been hysteretic, it is a pity that latest indexes still cannot be gathered yet.
